The Rise of the “Cool Dad”: How to Upgrade Your Dad Style

Let’s face it: dads and style aren’t exactly synonymous. You may be busy with your career, or you’ve got your hands full with a child or two, but you don’t have to let your style game slide. With Father’s Day just around the corner, we thought we’d pay our respect to dads everywhere with some suggestions for upgrading that dreaded “dad style”. Here are three men who are taking the cool dad look to a whole new level.

David Beckham

David Beckham rocks a suit like no one else. He may be a father of four, but he never fails to look great, whether he’s running errands or making a more official public appearance. If you’re more of a businessman who finds himself in the office a lot, look to Beckham for some formal-wear inspiration. He’s often seen in fitted—but not too tight—suits. He’s also someone who always pays attention to detail, from the tie clip to the cufflinks and the pocket square.

Follow his lead by keeping it classic and timeless with navy, gray and black suits. Maybe this means heading to a tailor to perfect your fit, or maybe it means finding out what a tie pin is. Whatever the case, when it comes to this type of dad style—less is more.

Josh Duhamel

If your style tends to be a little more casual than suits and ties, Josh Duhamel is the perfect celeb dad to look to for some ideas. He encompasses effortless, no frills, wake-up-and-go style, which is necessary as a father to an almost two-year-old son. Dark wash jeans, flannel shirts, and hiking boots are some of his staples. Even when it comes to dressing up he seems to keep it low key and makes it easy by leaving out the tie or wearing a hoodie under a blazer. The key to all of this is fit; just because the clothing is casual, doesn’t mean it can look ill-fitting or unkempt. Keeping it clean, fitted, and simple is an easy way to achieve “cool dad” status.

Kanye West

Now, some of you might gravitate towards something a little nicer than flannel, but a little less formal than suits—this is the Kanye West version of dad style. Kanye, despite his notorious reputation, tends to nail it in the style department, as do Kim and their daughter North. He can often be seen in leather jackets and oversized tees, or camo jackets and red high tops, plus a little bit of bling to top it off. What can we say, the man knows how to accessorize.

Consider following Kanye’s lead by sprucing up your own style with some cool cufflinks for a little bling, or adding a pop of colour with a pocket square. The key to nailing this look is choosing one statement piece and keeping everything else neutral; it will elevate your style immediately.

No matter who your style inspiration is, there’s always room for improvement. Why not treat yourself this Father’s Day and upgrade your dad style.
