The art of the tux: How to dress it up and down

What he does

“I’m an investment management attorney. Basically, I provide legal advice to individuals and institutions who are looking to invest their money in different ways.”

What people don’t know about investment management

“It’s actually stimulating. What makes it exciting for me is that I’m helping people realize their financial dreams. It’s also a challenge to stay current in the field, and to be the best.”

What makes him dress up

“I go to a black tie event two or three times a year. I enjoy a gala that has a good mix of pomp and fun. Last week, I was at the Minority Corporate Counsel Association Diversity Gala at the Kennedy Centre in DC. I go to the annual Headdress Ball here in Orlando, for a charity called Hope and Help that raises money for HIV AIDS awareness, prevention and care.”

On what helps someone rock a tuxedo

“Men have so few ways to distinguish themselves. The fit of a tuxedo and the silhouette is what makes a guy stand out. Having a tuxedo that doesn’t look like it’s from a rental store.”

It’s in the details

“My personal style for suits and formal wear is more on the American, understated, fitted kind of aesthetic. A simple silhouette tuxedo is a backdrop for a few eccentricities, like jewelled studs or a pocket square, to pop from.”

On dressing down the dress up

“The idea of the high and the low together is always interesting. I thought, ‘Why not take tuxedo pants that everyone recognizes as being a distinct marker of class, and play with it, so it’s not taken too seriously?’ I’ll wear them with sneakers and a t-shirt just for fun.”

Closing arguments

“Style is another way of speaking to the world. For better or worse, it acts as your calling card.”
